Great out of the box, better w a little DIY

Classic design perfectly suited to function. I chose the £7 version and it’s great. I found the casting a little bit rough so I took a few minutes clamped it in the vice and cleaned up each of the eight sides of its octagonal shape getting them a little flatter and a little nicer looking. However, it could do its job just as well for 1000 years exactly as it arrived. So this isn’t a complaint, just an invitation to spruce things up a little with a bit of elbow grease. I actually have used this already! I installed a new depth finder on my sailboat and I used this sounding weight plus a homemade Lyne to calibrate my new instrument at my morning on a calm day. Worked perfectly, and I’m very pleased to have this item on board in case I need to calibrate again, or just to have a fun diversion for passengers or myself now and then. Highly recommended would buy again. The 7 lb weight which I chose is appropriate for deeper waters and navigational use, the lighter version probably would have met my needs at this time, but I’m planning a coastal journey and so that’s why I chose the larger heavier £7 one. If you’re looking for a traditional way to check depth or have a back up to your electronics in case of a failure, this product is a great choice and MNB shipped quickly with no issues and good community.

It's exactly as described, and came promptly. Still working on the line for it, but I'm sure it will work fine - its only job is to be heavy, and it certainly is that
