NEW FOR 2026 Updated Formula • New Signature Scent
Canyon has been part of the Lodestar lineup since the early days. It was one of the earliest products we formulated, and over the years we have learned a tremendous amount about what makes a clay perform at its best. Rather than reinventing Canyon, it was time to refine it.
The result
So far I’ve tried Rio, Apex, and Canyon, and for my purposes I like Rio the best. I have extremely fine, thin straight hair, so I want a product that gives me texture and lift without weighing my hair down. Admittedly, a big ask! Canyon is pretty good, gives a nice all-day lift and chunky texture, but Rio seems to do the same thing while feeling softer to the touch and lighter weight. (Apex doesn’t seem to achieve as much lift as either.) Canyon has a touch more shine than Rio as well, which I don’t really need and can make me look a little greasy. It’s also more sticky during application, with a tendency to tug on my hair while being applied. (I style it dry, no blow dryer.)
Scent-wise, on paper I thought I would like Mosaic, but in person it’s rather strong, to the point that I’m a little self-conscious about how much my hair smells, and it’s not as woody as I would hope. Once again would choose Rio in Harmony as my favorite scent. (Apex in Clarity basically smells like nothing.)
Overall a good product, but just not quite what I need for my particular hair and styling method, so I’ll be sticking with Rio going forward.

Good product
The canyon clay has worked great for my hair giving it a nice matte finish that i’ve been looking for. I’ve tried a few other brands that left my hair too greasey even though they claimed their clay was matte, but the canyon clay definitely is a much truer matte. The hold is good and the texture is also nice. It does make my hair slightly sticky which i dont love but for the hold you get i can compromise. The mosaic scent isnt too powerful which is nice, but i’d like to try the clarity scent in the future, which claims it’s almost scent free.

Good stuff, not perfect, but good.
I bought this coming from Kevin Murphy Rough Rider and looking for something a little cheaper. The texture of Canyon is much more loose when scooped from the jar, but it becomes sticky quickly when rubbed between the palms. It really pulls on your hair when applying; any loose strands are going to be stuck to your palms. My hair is usually pretty dry when I apply the stuff, so maybe applying when damp would help.
The hold is exactly what I expect from the product category, and it leaves my hair nice and matte. It doesn't take much to have an effect, either, and I find that the texture of my hair is much more pleasant when styled with Canyon; not nearly so gunky as with Rough Rider.
I got the Clarity fragrance. The smell of the product is just sort of waxy and oily. If you told me there was no added fragrance I'd believe you. Then again, the contents of my jar were not flat upon arrival, so maybe the heat got to it?
At any rate, Canyon works just fine, and while it's not terribly comfortable to apply, I'll likely buy it again. It's also nice to be able to find a good vegan option.
