This is the CORRECT oil filter for your 1983-91 Vanagon. This one won't give you the "oil buzzer warning light" panic attack that the cheap domestic filters do. Oil is your engine's lifeblood, so don't mess around with lesser filters. (All GoWesty-built engines comes equipped with this filter.)

Great company to work with. One suggestion. I ordered one collapsible push rod tube but completely forgot about the seals. Maybe you can put these in with the tube.

This is the filter you want for 88 Vanagon 2WD, I bought this one to have on hand for the next change.
