Top value and adaptable modularity in mixed-terrain cycling sunglasses
Overall, these are a really nice pair of affordable activeware sunglasses. I am using them extensively across California microclimates with highly variable lighting for mixed surface, gravel cycling.
The build quality seems fine, given the price point, but the clincher is naturally in the modular design when parts begin to fail. (This has thankfully yet to happen after just one month.) It is hard to spend so much for sunglasses only to see one component fail and have to look around again.
The glasses do have a larger fit, enough that some cyclists might want a smaller frame. I do not notice any 'real' problems with the frame in my line of sight, but I am upgrading from a much worse pair of sunglasses, so don't trust my comparison. This particular type of photochromic lens has been a nice upgrade from my previous sunglasses. I have ridden them through dark forests and into full night lighting (with lights of course) and not felt the imperative to take them off. Perhaps they could be a bit bright for sunny desert road riding--but there are other variants better suited. This variety seems to do really well for a variety of riding styles (i.e. mountain bike to gravel) and conditions, like forests or dawn and dusk riding, wherein one is most worried about lacking enough light.
That being said, I also added in a clear lens for night riding. It certainly is worthwhile if one will do night riding or a lot of dusk-to-night rides (e.g. after-works). My main quibble here is that it is very hard to keep the lenses clean and spotless in the exchange. They are pretty easy and straightforward to exchange mid-ride, but are a little annoying. (I reckon the other Moab varieties are much trickier.) All of the above is mainly why I don't always swap to the clear lens.
Another potential concern is that the sunglasses seem to not be best at managing moisture. This could be more important if riding during colder/moister parts of the day, or in climates where this is very common. (I speculate this is just a compromise for the bargain price.)
Finally, the frame has very flamboyant colors. I guess that's okay, I just wouldn't mind something that pairs well with clothing and doesn't scream cyclist...so loudly.
And, and, I really wouldn't mind more subtle branding. I did pay for a pair of sunglasses and not to promote a brand (for free).
All in all, I doubt one can find better value for US activewear sunglasses that removes much of the anxiety in expensive sunglasses that inevitably degrade over time.
