I have been using Gamut regular gut strings on the top three strings of my treble viol for a number of years. In my experience, these strings have been quite reliable, with decent response and solid longevity. Because I live in a place with high humidity, I always get varnished strings. The fact that the d-1 is provided in double length is a plus.

Like all once-living fibers, gut strings aren't always complacent. In NE USA, close to the coast, there are lot of forces conspiring to make the situation worse. Experience teaches us to try to remember to loosen the upper strings between playing sessions, and still weather throws wild changes of pressure, humidity, and temperature. Double-length packaging is often a lifesaver, and swift response to reorders are what make your strings my first choices.
