"Warikomi" means 'sandwich' in Japanese. The blade of this knife has a central harder layer of SK steel for improved edge retention, sandwiched between two layers of soft iron for strength. This is the same construction you find in a Samurai sword.

Lovely little Higonokami - you won’t find anything better to have around for opening packages / breaking down boxes. Very sharp out of the box, both at the tip and along the edge. Blade is a little stiff to open, but I’d expect this to relax slightly over time.
