Transit Van Headliner Shelf

easy install, solid build, highly functional

The shelf does everything it's intended to do. I store sleeping bags, jackets, hats, gloves, clipboards etc. in it. The shelf is wide and deep enough to also store my insulated windshield cover. The shelf does flex a little due to the (8 inches or so) of cantilevering from the rearmost bolts. It's not a big issue since the shelf is not intended to be carrying significant weight. The installation was almost exactly as documented in the instructions. The adapter plates fit like gloves to the factory headliner shelf's mounting postsThe only minor issue is tightening the forward-most bolts when attaching the shelf to the adapter plates. Since the Transit headliner is sloped, there is very little room to get a socket in there. Instead I used a ratcheting box wrench, since I prefer to spin the nut instead of the bolt when tightening. I did detract from the FVC instructions by adding stainless fender washers to the rearward bolts to distribute the additional load of the FVC shelf and potential cargo on the mounting tabs of the factory shelf. I think it would be nice for FVC include these in their kit, but $1 for two at the local ACE is no biggie. Just to be fully mount and forget, I also added acorn nuts to all exposed bolt heads to reduce snagging (sweaters and mesh bags) that might end up getting stored in there.
