using the middle dividers creates 18 slots for knives, but for every row only one full-sized knife will fit, not 2. So these dimensions give you space for: 9 large/full-sized knives, 9 medium/smaller knives. if it was 1 or 2" deeper, it'd give enough room to fit 18 full-sized

it would have been nice if they put the divider halfway through the row as opposed to the spots that they did. when using them I can only put one knife in the row. even the smallest of my knives.

I honestly Love everything about my new knife case and risers. My only disappointment was that when I received the plexiglass top the front bottom strip of the plexiglass was completely disconnected and I had to use epoxy to reconnect it. You would only notice it if I pointed it out.
