Kamala comes from the Mallotus philippensis, a shrub native to India that is sometimes called the monkey face tree. The dye produces warm golden yellows when used with alum mordant. Kamala is less soluble then some other dyes so to extract it more efficiently us alcohol (vodka) or water with 1% soda ash added to it.
