Knurling is just right
Good grip, but not sharp.

Great Bar
Not new to lifting but new to buying my own equipment, if you're unsure like I was, maybe this'll help you decide.
The volcano knurling is what most garage gym lifters are probably going to want. A center knurl for squats, a weight capacity most people won't outgrow, this is probably what you're looking for for your rack. A mountain knurl, even "medium", is going to feel really aggressive. Volcano is comfortable and this bar feels solid.
My iron plates are chipped and sharp in the center from years of wear, they scrape the smooth sleeves (fixed with duct tape), needing more weight anyway, I bought new bumper plates that I mostly use for it now. I actually prefer the rippled sleeves on my old bar, the plates wouldn't slide re-racking 1 side at a time w/o clips.
