Unbound 40, initially thoughts
I took the unbound 40 out on a couple of short test hikes in advance of a backpacking trip coming up. Both hikes were about 4-5 miles with around 500’ ascents. Definitely a good number of pros with only a few cons that are likely more to user preference than anything else. The pros – the pack fits really well, I filled it with about 15 lb of gear and it carries well and stayed exactly where I positioned it which isn’t always the case with some of the packs I’ve been trying out. The water bottle pockets are some of the best that I have seen with easy access while you’re on the move, which is a must have for me. The belt pockets are a good size and you can open them up one-handed, I have a iPhone Pro 18 and it fits snugly so if you have a max version, it’s likely not going to fit in the belt pocket. I bought the additional pocket that attaches to the shoulder strap, it fits well and does not bounce around, but it’s way too bulky, and I will likely buy a third-party pocket for my phone. The underneath pocket is really nice and you can definitely fit a lot into the pack as a whole.The cons are again more likely user preference, I wish it had the shoulder pockets integrated, I have other packs that have that and once you have it you realize how much you miss not having them. This is the first pack that I have bought recently where I did feel the shoulder straps digging into my collarbone a bit. On the first hike I had both water bottles on one side, so I tried to even it out in the second hike and it seemed to help. I have two hyperlite packs and I’ve noticed that they tend to run hot on my back compared to other packs but it was still very comfortable.. Overall, this is a really nice pack, not sure it’ll be my go to quite yet, but it’s definitely right up there.
